QR code and Plant Specimens

Quick Response or QR codes are two dimensional barcodes that can be scanned by any camera equipped mobile device that has connection to the internet. Once the code is scanned, the mobile device will read through the code and the information embedded within the code will be revealed. Although QR codes mostly store URL information, any type of information can be coded within the QR code. Because of their gaining popularity, QR codes are now being incorporated to other areas and being utilized to provide different forms of communication to people and consumer. One example would be the use of QR codes in the plant community.

QR codes and Plant naming

Ever go to a plant show and see a beautiful orchid but you can’t seem to find the name the plant. Usually, when plant breeders are selling their plants, they have little markers by the plant or in the plants soil. These plant markers give the scientific name as well as the common name of the plant. A small picture of the plant is also placed on the marker. These markers are relatively small and only a limited amount of information can be placed on them. Placing QR codes on the plant markers makes it easy to add more information without using space. For example, a QR code embedded within a plant marker can store more information than just the plant names and scientific. QR codes can store where the plant originated from, how to take care of the plant, when to breed the plant and other interesting and necessary information. Customers can easily scan the QR code and then store the information onto their phone.

Benefits of Plant QR coding

There are numerous benefits of using a QR code for cataloguing plants. One major benefit is that it saves time and money. Customers don’t need to waste time asking around for information, they can just easily scan the QR code and the information will be embedded into their phone for easy viewing. The QR codes can then be scanned or placed in other places to, such as plant magazines, plant posters, or plant based websites.
